I Was Hooked from the Start
I’ve been a huge fan of personal development for quite some time. My very first PD book was Joe Karbo’s 1973 classic, “The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches”. It was a combination of what he called ‘Dyna/Psych’ and the application of how-to mail order instructions. I was immediately intrigued with the concept that a man could literally ‘think’ his way to success while utilizing proven, common sense work strategies.
Apparently it’s a dream that many, many people share. At one time, even Joe Karbo himself was in the clutches of bankruptcy after his popular west-coast TV show got pre-empted. Suddenly, he went from earning $50,000/week to being $50,000 in debt with no immediate way to repay his creditors. A single idea, coupled with Joe’s natural talent for writing ads and selling made him a virtual overnight millionaire as he filled the need for a not only a better way, but a ‘Lazy Way’!
Since then I’ve lined my personal library bookshelves with titles such as, “Think and Grow Rich” Napoleon Hill’s 1937 work which gave hope to so many at the height of the Great Depression. It went on to become one of the most revered self-help classics of all time.
My computer hard drive is home to many more volumes, including Ben Sweetland’s 1978 book, “Grow Rich While You Sleep”.
Lazy… Sleep… Think your way to success. Like a gambler pinning his last dollar on the next spin of the wheel, I bought the dream, over and over again.
Did I win? You’ll see later in this post.
This One Book Put Me Over the Top
One of my favorite books of all time is a very simple text written about 100 years ago. The title is, “The Science of Getting Rich” authored by Wallace Wattles. It first came to my attention back in 2004 and I’ve revisited it several times over the years, picking up new things with every re-read.
As you would expect, the author suggests and then goes on to prove that anyone – including YOU and I – can be rich. This alone is a bold enough statement, sure to raise the eyebrows of even the most gullible (or those desperate enough to want to believe)… like me!
However, in the very first chapter, Wattles also says that not only CAN everyone become rich; he brazenly states that we are OBLIGATED to become rich! Clearly, this statement is not designed to raise eyebrows. Rather, it is targeted to IRK the reader by throwing down the gauntlet.
The challenge is to gather all that you can in order to become all that you can. The premise is that you NEED to be rich in order to receive proper training and education. You NEED to be rich in order to acquire the tools and other ‘things’ necessary to perform your trade to the highest of standards. You NEED to be rich in order to attract the people who can further advance your station in life. Like attracts like; success breeds success; the rich become richer; etc.
The admonishment is that to settle for less is a direct slap in the face of your Co-Creator… that’s right, CO-Creator. Mr. Wattles professes that we live in a creative Universe where we partner with Forces that are always at our call. Our role in this partnership is easy. In fact, it is Lazy… Sleep… THINK! Even the Bible verifies this fact,
“Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.” Job 22:28
We think; we decree. That’s it; that’s all we are required to do. It’s all we CAN do. The Universe does the rest by arranging people and circumstances to match our beliefs; our feelings; our decrees. “It shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.” In other words, you will be shown HOW! Opportunities will appear as if by magic. How hard can it be?
Try focusing on one thought for even as little as a minute. Go ahead and try it now. For most people, even in that extremely small span of time, their mind wanders to no less than ten different thoughts. And there lies the BIGGEST challenge. Rarely do people focus their thoughts and feelings with bulldog-like tenacity. Rather, their thoughts are more like whimsical wishes, weak, forever fleeting, and totally ineffective.
What are you settling for in life? Are you even the least bit skeptical that you can have ALL that you want… and then some, as you raise your horizons to new levels? “The Science of Getting Rich” is just that… a SCIENCE that instructs you how to train your mind to achieve laser focus so that you DON’T have to settle for anything ever again.
So, Did It Work for Me?
In hindsight, the principles of this book are what helped me to attract Maggie, the woman of my dreams. Just a few short years ago, this ‘match-made-in-heaven’ was merely a fantasy; a figment of my over-active (OK, desperate) imagination. Other articles on this blog go into great detail as to ‘how’ this actually happened.
The principles of this book are also responsible for attracting the ‘CURE’ for my Leukemia condition. What once seemed impossible is now inevitable. I certainly didn’t come all this way to the ‘Wizard of Oz’ only to be turned away by a ‘balloon man’. Silly Russy; always dreaming!
Admittedly, I’m still working on the financial ‘riches’ part. But like the old song says, “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad”. So far!
Download your FREE copy of, “The Science of Getting Rich”. Read it with an open mind. The book WILL change your life. It has certainly changed mine! I know you’re gonna Love That Feeling!

Hey Russ,
Keep going on this idea… I always say “It’s not the principle but the interest that counts.”
