Beginnings
Can you believe it has been over 40 years since the group Chicago released their first epic album? The date was April 28, 1969. I was looking forward to the end of my sophomore year in high school. Carl Yastrzemski was the hero of the Red Sox, hitting for league leading average and power. Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito were about to bring the Stanley Cup home to Boston. Bill Russell was completing his brilliant player/coach career by bringing yet another NBA championship to Beantown, the 11th in 13 years.
It was a heady time for this kid growing up in the greater-Boston area.
So when a band from Chicago was able to break through all that hoopla, not only in Boston but in cities around the world, you knew they had to be special.
Today’s list of songs were suggested by my brother Chris, a long-time Chicago fan (band only – the sports heart is still loyal to Boston!) A fine musician in his own right, having toured the world as a drummer with the group, “Up With People” as well as several other professional groups in the New England area throughout the 70′s and 80′s, Chris knows a great song when he hears one.
Because of his new lady Deb, the songs Chris picked for us have a very special meaning. You can click on each of the following songs where you will find the videos and complete lyrics, plus other links for further background on the songs, composers as well as the group. Also, see what Chris has to say about each song and what they mean to him.
