What’s So Funny About Having Cancer?
OK, so I am blessed with a very warped sense of humor. I can laugh at just about anything. I’ll admit, there are times when going through the situation is anything but funny. Eventually the sun comes shining through and I am able to see a silly side. My ‘Chemo Hair Loss’ video is such an example.
My previous round of chemo wasn’t so pleasant. I spent a good bit of time paying homage to the Porcelain Goddess. Now THAT would have made a hilarious video, don’t you think?
NOT!
Still, I laugh at all the challenges I’m overcoming through this ordeal. For me, this approach truly is the best medicine. Surround yourself with upbeat people. Watch comedies. And especially, learn to laugh at yourself!
Plug In For a Huge Boost
By default, I’m a recluse. Quiet alone time and privacy are right near the top of my ‘Most Protected Qualities’ list. I really have to work at connecting with people.
With today’s burgeoning technology, there really is no excuse today for not being able to connect. I’m phone-phobic and a home-body, but I love to write. Communicating with others via Facebook, Twitter and my blog gives me a way to connect and keep in touch while still preserving my precious privacy.
The thing is, the more I connect with people in ways that are comfortable for me, the more confident I’m starting to feel about getting out and about more. While I’ll probably never be a party animal in this lifetime, I can see myself enjoying an evening with a small group of friends. That’s a tremendous change from even a year ago.
How To Be Thankful When You Continue to Get Knocked Down
It’s all how you look at things. Yes, I could easily bemoan the fact that I had a reversal in health after a good seven year remission. Here’s a quick list of how I am grateful right now:
- I live in a country that fully pays for my chemo treatment
- I have a drug plan that fully pays for my extra meds – anti-nausea this month alone was $225.
- I have a loving family plus a growing network of friends and acquaintances around the world sending me their love and best vibrations. Full recovery is inevitable!
Life is good and getting better because I’m consciously choosing my focus.
You’re Doing It On Purpose, Aren’t You?
You’re darned right I am. Having a purpose in life is the engine that keeps you getting up each day and jumping those hurdles as if they weren’t even there. I’ve decided that my purpose is to take the challenges I’ve been handed and prove that there is nothing — NOTHING — in this life that a person can’t overcome as long as there is:
- Laughter
- Connection
- Gratitude
- Purpose
As a natural student of life, I’ve been on both sides of the equation. I’ve gone the negative thinking route. Hey, it’s how I got myself into my many predicaments in the first place.
But I have also observed that AS SOON AS I changed my thinking, my life also began to change in the very same direction as my focus.
Therefore I can say with certainty that any one of the gifts I mentioned above will get you a long way in life. Using them in combination will change your life in ways you won’t believe.
As I sit here on Friday afternoon awaiting the detox crash that usually follows a chemo treatment, I am amazed at the amount of energy flowing through my being. I’ll be posting regularly on Facebook over the weekend. All I can say is if it’s as good as it is now, you gotta Love That Feeling!
